During his appearance on the EnVision podcast, McCallum Morgan, the Program Director of the Historic Pearl Theater, underscored the significance of its full name, clarifying that it is not simply “The Pearl.” McCallum is committed year-round to providing a diverse range of entertainment options for the community. Although the Historic Pearl Theater is relatively young—established as a 501(c)(3) in 2012—it is housed in a beautifully renovated former church that has stood just a few blocks from downtown Bonners Ferry for decades.
They host a wide variety of events at the venue, including movie screenings, live music, tarot card readings, and educational classes. In fact, at one point, the calendar became so packed with activities that The Pearl received feedback from patrons indicating it felt overwhelming.
“People said there was so much on the calendar that they couldn’t decide what to attend, so they ended up not coming to anything!” explains McCallum.
Feedback is extremely important to McCallum and the Pearl, which is largely run by volunteers.
McCallum holds one of the few paid positions, and although it is technically part-time, there is certainly enough work to make it feel like a full-time job. In response to feedback about the overwhelming number of events on the calendar, McCallum has reduced the overall number of offerings.
“The really great part is that I rarely have to seek out acts; people are constantly reaching out to me with interest in performing at the theater,” says McCallum.
Determining what succeeds at The Pearl is an ongoing learning process. While live music—The Shook Twins being a notable exception—typically doesn't sell as many tickets, the same can be said for movies. Both movies and live music will continue to be part of The Pearl's programming, but the venue is also exploring a variety of other events, including classes, choir recitals, and the inaugural Pride festival in Bonners Ferry. This festival drew unexpectedly high attendance despite significant backlash in the lead-up to the event.
McCallum emphasizes that The Pearl’s goal is to be inclusive of all the diverse individuals living in Northern Idaho. To enhance nightlife in Bonners Ferry, the venue offers “after dark” events for adults, as well as family-friendly activities and everything in between. The Pearl also hosts a variety of gatherings beyond entertainment, including book talks, writers' groups, and even a drum circle. On the first weekend of November, The Pearl will present a fundraiser variety show called
Bonners Burlesque, modeled after
Angels Over Sandpoint’s famous Follies. McCallum is still accepting act submissions for the variety show.
“You never know what will pop up on the events calendar,” says McCallum. It is a beautiful drive from Sandpoint to Bonners too so I encourage everyone to check it out and make the trip every once in a while.”
It's also worth mentioning that The Pearl offers some of the most affordable beer and wine in Boundary County and is available for private event rentals.
The Pearl Theater’s mission as a nonprofit organization is to nurture and develop the artistic talents of community members of all ages. It serves as a hub for social engagement and promotes excellence in the performing arts by showcasing local, national, and international artists.
